In our recent Religious Education class, our 4th- and 5th-grade students brought faith to life through a meaningful, creative hands-on project—designing their own Paschal candles.
The Paschal candle holds a special place in the Catholic Church, especially during the Easter season. It represents the light of Christ—present in the world yesterday, today, and always. Through this project, students explored the symbolism behind the candle, including the cross, the Alpha and Omega (the beginning and the end), and the current year, reminding us that Christ’s light is alive in our lives right now.
Each student was allowed to design and color their own candle, adding personal touches while incorporating these important symbols. The results were both vibrant and thoughtful—no two candles were exactly alike, yet each one reflected a shared understanding of faith, hope, and renewal.
As they worked, students also connected their designs to prayer and reflection. Many included written intentions or phrases that expressed gratitude, praise, and a desire for guidance. This allowed them not only to learn about the Paschal candle but to experience its meaning in a personal and heartfelt way.
Projects like this help bring a deeper understanding of the lessons we share in class. By combining creativity with faith, our students engage with these teachings in ways that stay with them—far beyond the classroom.
We are so proud of our 4th and 5th graders for their creativity, effort, and the light they continue to shine.
